2nd Day Antigua
After breakfast, our group sets out on foot from our hotel and heads north into the hills surrounding Antigua.  We will spend the morning walking through the coffee plantations and ridges which surround the Antiguan Valley.  The views out over the valley are well worth the climb, and as we pass through small villages and farmland, we get a chance to see how many Guatemalans make their living in the mountains surrounding our valley.  After a full morning of walking, our transport will drop us back in Antigua to enjoy lunch and another afternoon to sightsee, shop, and enjoy the town.

3rd Day Antigua

Volcano Pacaya (8160ft/2500m) may not be the tallest volcano in Guatemala; however its recent history of eruptions and lava flows certainly makes it one of the most impressive. Set in its own National Park, Pacaya is a storybook volcano with a continuous plume of smoke drifting from its ever-changing peak.  Pacaya’s dramatic caldera eruption in May of 2010 has created a truly unique landscape of challenging slopes and lava fields.  Hikers are rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding volcanoes and Pacific coastland during the climb, and often hikers have the rare opportunity to roast marshmallows over “hot-spots” on Pacaya’s rocky ridges. Our group will drive to the mountain after an early breakfast in Antigua, and upon arrival enter Parque National Volcano Pacaya at the trail head.  Our guide will gather information from the park stewards at the entrance and decide on the best trail to traverse the mountain.  If there are active lava flows near the summit, our group will head in their direction as we hike through fresh lava flows and hot spots which blanket the slopes of Volcano Pacaya.

Lunch is served picnic-style on the volcano, and after our descent we return by vehicle to Antigua in the early afternoon.

4th Day Lake Atitlán
After meeting at the hotel for an early morning breakfast and check-out, we make sure everyone has everything they need for the Atitlán trip and set-off up into the stunning Guatemalan Highlands.  Our private transport carries our bikes, bags and bodies on a 2½-hour ride through farmland and countryside.  After a short break in the roadside town of Tecpán, we arrive at our bicycle ride’s starting point in lofty Las Trampas.  Here riders have an opportunity to change their clothing based on weather conditions, fill up water bottles, and adjust the fit on their mountain bikes. Our guides will give instructions and advice on the bicycle ride, explain what to expect, and make sure everyone is comfortable before we set off.  There will be plenty of time for riders to ask questions, take pictures, and apply sunscreen. From the ride’s start – a downhill country road traverses the high tableland above the lake and brings us through several small, sleepy farming villages.  Excellent views of the highlands surround us as we pass through a larger town – Godinez – before rounding the last ridgeline and joining the road to Panajachel.  At the first vista directly overlooking Lake Atitlán, our group will stop to enjoy a freshly-prepared picnic lunch while our guides orientate riders to the towns and geographic features of Lake Atitlán. After lunch, riders continue on a winding downhill ride to the town of Panajachel – the last stop on our bike-ride.

5th Day Lake Atitlán – Quetzaltenango
After a beautiful sunrise and breakfast at our hotel, our group meets up in swimsuits at the lake shore for a morning of paddling on the lake.  Setting off in our kayaks, we paddle the next 2 hours in the calm, azure waters of Lake Atitlán – moving southbound along the western shore of the lake.  Our kayak trip affords us fantastic views of the small villages perched on the steep sides of the sheer ridges of the lake.  We cruise into the bay of San Marcos la Laguna, where our boat taxi meets us to bring us back to Panajachel. After check-out in town, our group is off again to Quetzaltenango (Xela) – 3 hours further into the beautiful Guatemalan Highlands.  We’ll check into our hotel upon arrival in Xela, and have a chance to clean up and get a good dinner in us after a long day of kayaking and travel.

6th Day Quetzaltenango
Our group sets out for Laguna Chicabal after breakfast in Xela.  This high alpine lake is located inside the caldera of Volcano Chicabal, surrounded by beautiful cloud forest and Mayan religious alters.  Because the Laguna is sacred to the Mam Mayan people (the local indigenous population), we will see the remains of religious ceremonies held inside the volcanic caldera, and learn about Mayan “Cosmo vision”.After our morning hike, we continue by vehicle to the beautiful Fuentes Georginas – a popular, geo-thermally heated natural hot springs carved into the lush slopes of Volcano Zunil.  After lunch at the hot springs, we have the opportunity to relax and soak in the mineral-rich waters before returning to Xela for the evening.

7th Day Quetzaltenango – Antigua
After breakfast in Xela, we will spend the morning hiking on the slopes of Volcano Santa Maria.  This easy hike is will lead us to a natural terrace with fantastic views of the longest-erupting volcano in Guatemala – Volcano Santiaguito.  Located approximately 1km from the crater of Santiaguito, we will have a chance to view the smoldering summit which has been erupting constantly since 1922!  Santiaguito’s twisted mass of lava flows, mud and ash provide a dramatic contrast with the gently rolling Pacific coast landscapes in the background. After we descend from our lookout point, we spend the afternoon traveling back to Antigua.
